Miles Lewis: Procreate for Fine Artists (5/17/2025)

$100.00

A Creative Intro to Procreate on iPad

Instructor: Miles Lewis

Max: 20 Students

May 17th, 2025 / 1-5pm (including a 20 min. break)

(Please arrive 20 minutes early. Parking is ample and easy. )

Procreate is a wonderful iPad app that provides traditional artists an extra set of tools for composing, editing, and mocking up final works. Used broadly in the entertainment and graphic design fields, its ease of use and natural feel have been winning over traditional artists who may be left cold by the more technical interfaces of older graphics technology.

With an eye towards traditional drawers and painters, this class is a concentrated opportunity for students to learn the basics and receive advice on how to best adapt Procreate to the current flow of their drawing and painting practice, while maximizing creative enjoyment.

Miles has developed his career as a painter, portraitist, public artist, and educator through traditional means. He will bring this awareness of the different qualities and functions that analog makers might want to his discussion of the software.

Students will leave this class with a much clearer idea of how to identify and deploy Procreate’s features to take their skills and pictorial ambition farther than they thought possible.

THE WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE:

I. INTRODUCTION (~ 20 min.)

A presentation by Miles of how he uses Procreate and what he uses it for.

A discussion of his gradual adoption of digital drawing and painting methods.

Miles will also present other artists’ work in the medium.

II. COMPOSING (~ 60 min)

Miles will lead an exercise in the use of Procreate from sketch to finished painting. Miles will emphasize where Procreate adds to the traditional process of developing and finalizing an image concept.

III. DRAWING AND PAINTING (~ 60 min.)

Miles will lead an exercise in observational drawing and painting, emphasizing where Procreate can easily function like traditional media AS WELL AS where digitally-specific functions help to break down walls and reduce labor in jumping from one stage of production to the next.

IV. EDITING AND MOCKUPS (~60 min.)

As with many graphics interfaces, Procreate is excellent for editing and compositing.

In this section, Miles will lead an exercise on how to accomplish this with multiple image elements and references with the objective of a finished picture.

V. REVIEW (~40 min.)

Miles will lead students in a discussion and critique of the work produced during the day. Students will learn by comparison between their own works and the works of their classmates.
